MADMAHESHWAR TEMPLE is said that after the Mahabharata war, when the Pandavas came here to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva, Shiva took the form of a bull here. But the Pandavas were also firm in their stubbornness, they followed them to Kedar. Lord Shankar was pleased to see his resolve and appeared to him. Shiva appeared in different forms at five different places of Panch Kedar. Shiva's arms appeared in Tangunath, mouth in Rudranath, navel in Madhyamaheshwar and Jata in Kalpeshwar, that is why Kedarnath including these four places is called Panchkedar. Inside the temple, a Nagal shaped Shiva Lingam is placed along with another Ardhanarishvara (half Shiva and half Parvati idol). This holy shrine remains closed during the months of November to April, during which the prayers are shifted to Ukhimath.
